Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe, a founder member of the opposition New Patriotic Party, who is serving a suspension term for flouting internal mechanisms in resolving party disagreements, has accused Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo of abandoning the election campaign battlefield for foreign trips.
According to him, unlike former President Kufuor, who was always on the battlefield, Akufo Addo has been globetrotting and rather soliciting for campaign funds.
In an extensive one and half hours radio interview on Asempa FM’s ‘Ekosii Sen’ programme hosted by Kojo Asare Baffour Acheampong (KABA) on Tuesday afternoon, Dr Tamakloe questioned the number of foreign trips Nana Addo has undertaken in 2016 alone.
“He has been to London how many times this year,” he asked the host.
“The present difficulties that we are going through as a party… I have never for a second thought certain decisions would have been taken by Nana Addo. What has he benefited from the National Chairman of the party being put on ice?” he asked.
The former Ghana Ambassador to Serbia and Montenegro alleged that the NPP was lacking funds for this year’s election campaign due to apathy from party members.
“…I know I am not in the inner bracket, but I know, if we had money Nana Addo will not be junketing all the place like that. The battlefield is here, he has abandoned the battlefield, Kufuor was always on the battlefield, and this is what we want Nana Addo to do,” he said.
“He has been to London how many times this year. You are the leader of the party; you should be seen here in the hamlets, in the villages, that is where your presence is required not junketing all over the place.
When he was prompted on the fact that Nana Addo was going around to raise funds, Dr Tamakloe said that was even dangerous because, “the leader of the party should not be at the forefront of begging, a lot of people are ready to do it if you allow them to… That is the style and way it is done. I don’t believe Clinton goes cup in hand looking for money; there are people who do that,” he said.
“So if it is him [Nana Addo] who would have to talk to people before the money comes in then we are in trouble…why can’t he trust the finance committee to go there and solicit for funds for the party.”’
In Dr Tamakoe’s view, Nana Addo should “cry for unity” when he returns to Ghana since the level of apathy in the party has gone up high.
