NCCE to organize debate for parliamentary candidates

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) will organise a debate for parliamentary candidates in all the 275 constituencies as part of strategies to promote issues-based campaign to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections in 2016.

The Commission would also hold an inter-party dialogue committee to promote healthy political activities at the constituency levels through key actors including civil society organisations.

Mr Samuel Akuamoah, Deputy Chairman in-charge of Operations, NCCE, made this known in Accra when he briefed journalists on programmes outlined by the Commission to ensure peaceful existence ahead of the 2016 general election.

The programme would be on the theme: “My Ghana, the Power of One”.

Mr Akuamoah said article 42 of the Constitution urges registered voters to exercise their civic duty by turning out massively in a peaceful atmosphere to vote in elections and elect leaders to lead the governance processes for the next four years.

He said there would be series of encounter with leading Presidential aspirants on key matters of the elections including party manifestoes and the supremacy of the Constitution.

He noted that the NCCE was collaborating with the Council of State on a campaign to deal with issues of indiscipline, which trigger electoral violence across the country.

“There is ongoing public education and engagements on the growing levels of intolerance, polarization, and the use of intemperate language on the airwaves to ensure peaceful elections,” he added.

Mr Akuamoah said as part of strategies to ensure peaceful elections in 2016, the NCCE would collaborate with the Electoral Commission and the National Media Council to enhance public education on key processes of elections.

“There would be engagement at the community, village and town levels across the country to promote tolerance in the electoral process, as well as media engagements to ensure partnership and enhance visibility of the operations”. GNA
