I’m yet to renew my Ashgold contract – Hayford

The Miners coach and reigning GPL champion has rubbished speculations that he has signed a three-year deal with the Obuasi-based side

Ashanti Gold manager Bashir Hayford has denied penning any contract extension as widely reported by local media.

Hayford’s contract with the Miners expired last July but was made to remain on board as the team went on to clinch the 2014-15 Ghana Premier League title in September.

The league triumph – the club’s first in 19 years – sealed Ashgold’s place as Ghana’s sole representatives for the 2016 Caf Champions League where they have been drawn to play Algerian side MO Bejaia in the preliminary round.

“We have discussed the contract but I have not seen it, so I have not signed,” Hayford told Starr FM.

“My contract expired way back in July but because of my cordial relationship with the management I’m working with, I decided to continue.

“I went to the mines with my CEO [Chief Executive Officer] Kudjoe Fianoo and we discussed the contract extension but they are yet to bring it out for me to study and append my signature.

“Once the team has qualified for Africa, it’s very prudent for me to stay.”

Hayford joined Ashgold in 2013 from Medeama SC after an earlier spell with Asante Kotoko.

He was adjudged Coach of the Year at the PLB/GFA Ghana Premier League Awards for the 2014-15 league season.
