The police in Ashanti have arrested and detained a 72-year old Burkinabe, Moro Sata, believed to engaged in illegal weapons supply in the West Africa sub-region
They seized from him 11 AK47 assault rifles, 10 SG rifles used by the military, a machine gun, four firing pins, clocking handling and anti-aircraft ammunition.
This is said to be the biggest weapons and ammunition seizure by the police in the region.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Kofi Boakye, the Regional Commander, told a news briefing that, Sata was arrested at Akwatialine in Kumasi, on last week Friday, at about 1930 hours.
He said they acted upon intelligence, adding that, the suspect had already confessed receiving the supplies from Cote d’ Ivoire, Burkina Faso and Niger.
The suspect, according to the Regional Commander, was co-operating with the police and had mentioned one Abdul Kadri Aria, an Ivorian, as his main supplier.
They had been using Ghana as transit point to ferry illegal arms and ammunition to conflict areas across the sub-region.
DCOP Kofi Boakye said four armed robbers, they were holding had already admitted buying weapons from Sata.
He assured the people of the determination of the police to go to every length to bring down robbery and other violent crimes to enable the law-abiding to go about their daily business in peace. GNA
