Accra Great Olympics and Kpando Heart of Lions have joined BA United on the relegation list as the curtains of the 2014/2015 GPL season were drawn on Sunday
Accra Great Olympics and Kpando Heart of Lions were unable to protect their premier league spots as they joined BA United to be relegated to the second tier.
BA United were the first to be relegated many weeks ago, but the others needed favourable results on the final day to determine their fate.
Lions needed all three points against Edubaise FC to survive, but Yusif Abubakar’s men suffered a 4-2 defeat to leave them firmly rooted in the bottom three. The win however handed Edubaise their premier league place after battling relegation for many weeks.
For Olympics, a win wasn’t all they needed, since results from other centres were required to determine their status. Despite coming from a goal down to beat champions Ashgold 2-1, the Wonder Boys ended the season as confirmed relegation candidates after making a return to the top-flight at the start of the season.
BA United, who have been uncompetitive since they got relegated, ended their campaign with a 4-1 defeat to Bechem United.
Elsewhere, Kumasi Asante Kotoko walloped Aduana Stars 4-0, while Sekondi Hasaacas also beat the drop after recording a 2-1 away win at Liberty Professionals.
Medeama SC defeated Inter-Allies 2-1 in Tarkwa to remain in the top-flight.
Accra Hearts of Oak and WAFA settled for a goalless draw game in Sogakope. A draw was all WAFA needed to stay in the league. The Academy Boys are the only new entrants who are left in the GPL following the relegation of BA United and Great Olympics.
Kofi Owusu scored twice to emerge as the top scorer of the season as Berekum Chelsea posted a 2-1 win over WA All Stars at the Golden City Park. Owusu has 19 goals to his credit, one ahead of Nathaniel Asamoah, who left Medeama SC for Raja Casablanca in Morocco last two weeks.
AshGold, Aduana Stars, Berekum Chelsea and Accra Hearts of Oak were the top-four finishers.
Liberty Professionals and Asante Kotoko finished just outside the top-four bracket.
