Former Ghana coach Attuquayefio dies after Cancer fight

Cecil Jones AttuquayefioSir Cecil Jones Attuquayefio, a former head coach of the Ghana football national team the Black Stars has died.

Attuquayefio, who led the Accra Hearts of Oak to the African Champions league title in 2000 died in the early hours of Tuesday May, 12, 2015.

His death came after a long battle with throat cancer. In 2012, a charity match between the Black Stars and the friends of Attuquayefio, was played in his honor.

A family member who requested anonymity tells that Mr. Attuquayefio died earlier today at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

Attuquayefio, a former Ghana player started his coaching career in the mid 1970’s. He led Hearts to African Champion league title in 2000 and at the 2004 African Cup of Nations coached the Benin national team.

He was 70 years-old.
