Salman Khan, a superstar Bollywood actor has been sentenced to five years in prison by a court in India over a hit-and-run case he has been battling for over a decade.
49-year-old Khan, who has appeared in some of the biggest hit movies like Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, in the Indian movie industry was found guilty on Wednesday of negligently driving his SUV over sleeping men in India’s financial capital Mumbai, in September of 2002 on his way back from a bar.
One of the men he was accused of hitting with his vehicle died and a culpable homicide charge was brought against him.
He denied he was the driver behind the deadly crash but authorities who said the actor left the scene of the accident charged him for the crime.
VibeGhana.com entertainment correspondent Fareed Samir, who said he grew up watching some of Salman Khan’s movies says the verdict will cost the world’s second largest film industry (Bollywood).
“He is so big in Bollywood. Monetarily, the industry will be hit for sure. He has a very big fan base and any movie involving him is almost a hit. I remember watching one of his movies (Maine Pyar Kiya) a story about two love birds and even as a child I saw the talent he possessed.”
Khan, an ex-boyfriend of former Miss World beauty pageant winner Aishwarya Rai, is reported to be processing a bail application through the Mumbai High Court.
