An 18-year-old man, Nelson Williams, arrested in connection with the alleged kidnapping and raping of Takoradi-based YFM radio presenter, Adaeze Onyinyechie Ayoka, has told the police that the rape act was staged on the request of the radio presenter.
Nelson, a resident of Abossey Okai in Accra who was among the three youngsters seen allegedly raping the radio presenter, popularly called Ada, said they were rather engaged by her to stage the rape act and recorded for Ada’s own use.
Ada was allegedly kidnapped and gang-raped after going missing for five days.
ASP Effia Tengey, Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, told journalists yesterday that Nelson, who is a painter by profession, said the act was staged by five persons, including Ada herself, another lady friend and two other men at a hotel near Abossey Okai in Accra.
Giving reasons for the action, Nelson is said to have told the police that Adaeze aka Princess Ada, being a friend of the five, approached them that the boyfriend had jilted her and so she wanted to portray a scene for the boyfriend to believe that his new girlfriend was behind the supposed abduction.
“They then went to the hotel, staged the act and took pictures of the scene after which they posted them on the social media,” ASP Tengey said.
The YFM presenter has been in the news for some time now after news of her alleged kidnapping broke on Monday, April 13, 2015, followed by pictures of her being sexually assaulted under the guise of being gang-raped.
Addressing a press conference in Accra, ASP Tengey said Nelson, currently in police custody, told them that when Rahman Nunoo, Ada’s boyfriend, saw the pictures, he would feel pity for her and would accuse the new girlfriend (name withheld) as the mastermind behind the kidnapping and the rape.
“Suspect narrated that even though in the picture they were seen lying on top of the supposed victim, there was no penetration,” the police spokeswoman said.
She said the suspect denied sexually assaulting Ada and that anything that happened on the said date indeed happened with her consent.
ASP Tengey added that since the supposed victim is presently in a traumatic condition, the police were yet to take her side of the story before Nelson would be released.
Ada is currently at the Police Hospital in Accra receiving treatment after being flown from Takoradi. Police say she needs mental examination before her statement is taken.
“The police will have the opportunity to interrogate her further for a clearer picture of the incident after she had been examined both physically and mentally,” she claimed. “Unless the girl gains her mental stability, we can’t talk to her,” she added.
Efforts were being made to apprehend the other suspects who took part in the act but are currently on the run.
When DAILY GUIDE visited the Police Hospital yesterday after the press conference, Ada, who was wearing a yellow and brown skirt and top, was lying at the outpatient department of the facility in handcuffs while two heavily armed police officers were guarding her. She was not allowed to speak to the media.
Meanwhile, the father of the radio presenter, Samuel Oduro Antwi, has been speaking to the media.
“I know my daughter very well; she will never do what people are saying. She is not a psycho but a very intelligent lady,” Oduro Antwi told Peace Fm yesterday.
Mr Antwi was responding to the allegation that his daughter staged the rape saga and afterwards posted the pictures on her facebook page.
According to him, there was no way his daughter would do something like that.
He also confirmed that his daughter is a Ghanaian by name Naana Appiah Antwi and not a Nigerian as earlier rumoured.
Mr Antwi explained how his daughter’s name changed from Naana Appiah Antwi to Adaeze, saying, “She worked with a man at a communication centre by name Ayoka and because of how good he was and how he treated her as his own daughter, she adopted the name Adaeze Onyinyechie Ayoka.”
Ada, he said, was born on October 2, 1989.
