Ghana’s medal hopeful in boxing, Azumah Mohamed lost under controversial circumstances to Scott Fitzegerald of England, in the Men Welterweight division of the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
Mohamed, who was a sure bet to pick a medal is now out of the competition, after he lost by a close margin of 22-21 to the English.
However, Ghana’s medal prospects in the competition remains bright as Sulemanu Tetteh, in a unanimous decision defeated Gerie Donovan from Mauritius by (30-27), (30-27), (30-26), to advance to the quarter-finals of the Men’s Light flyweight division (49kg).
In Swimming, Jackson Abbiw, Nana Kwabena Antwi placed fifth and sixth with a time 26.25 and 27.17 respectively in Men’s 50m freestyle Heat Three, whilst Kweku Addoplaced sixth in the Men’s 50 meter Freestyle.
Joseph Dzorvakpor and Emmanuel Koli, also dropped out of the Shooting competition after placing 37th and 39th in the Men’s 50m Rifle qualification.
Ghana’s prospects in Weightlifting continue to dwindle as Prince Nyarko, placed fifth in both Snatch and Clean and Jerk categories, though he enhanced his personal record by two kilograms.
With eight lifters representing Ghana, five have so far competed but failed to make any progress with the remaining three yet to compete. GNA
