Director vows not to tolerate absenteeism

The Asante-Akim South District Education Director, Mr Yaw Frank Musa, has warned of punitive sanctions against teachers, who absent themselves from classrooms without authorization.

He said absenteeism and other acts of indiscipline could not be tolerated.

Addressing a meeting with heads of basic schools in the area at Juaso, he said the situation where some of them used phone calls to ask for permission to stay out of school was completely unacceptable.

He insisted on written requests, copies of which must be sent to the district education office.

Mr Musa said everything would be done to make sure that there was optimal use of school contact hours, noting that, this was the way to improve academic performance.

He urged effective supervision in schools by doing the proper things without fear or favour. Both teachers and pupils should accept to play by the rules.

He condemned the reported unapproved fees charged by some of the head teachers in respect of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) registration and asked that any such illegal fee collected should be refunded to parents.

The heads complained about the lack of registers, chalk, text books and teacher’s notebooks in the schools. GNA
