The National Lottery Authority in collaboration with the Western Regional Police Command has arrested 32 persons from the Sekondi/Takoradi metropolis, for lottery fraud.
A statement issued by the Authority on Sunday said the suspects are alleged to have contravened the National Lotto Act, Act 722 of 2006, which makes illegal lotto operation a criminal offence under the laws of Ghana – only the National Lottery Authority is mandated by law to run lottery.
When convicted, these 32 persons would be fined, or given a custodian sentence, or both.
“We therefore wish to caution the general public that, any form of lottery, except lottery authorized by the National Lottery Authority, is illegal. Those who stake illegal lotto, as well as the operators of illegal lotto, face jail sentences, if convicted,” the statement warned.
The statement stated that the Authority is closely monitoring illegal lotto operators, as well as stakers of illegal lotto.
It also cautioned that landlords, who rent out their property for such illegal activities will have their properties confiscated to the state and also fined.
It also appealed to the general public, for the supreme interest of the state, to report any suspicious lottery activity to the nearest Police Station or National Lottery Authority.
