Nandom Traditional Council honours EPA Director

The Nandom Traditional Council has honoured the former Upper West Regional Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) , Mr Asher Nkegbe, for contributing towards sustainable environmental management in the Nandom Traditional Area.

Mr Nkegbe who is now the Upper East Regional Director of the EPA served in the Upper West as the EPA Director for 15 years before he was transferred to the Upper East this year as the Director of the EPA.

In a citation given to the former Upper West EPA Director on the occasion of the 2013 Kakube Festival held in the Nandom District of the Upper West Region, Nandom Naa, Dr. Charles Puoure Puobe Chiir the Seventh, lauded him for enforcing the ‘control and prevention of the laws on bush fires in Region, particularly in Goziir in the Nandom Traditional Area.

The Traditional Council stressed that through the efforts of Mr Nkegbe the people of Nandom – Tobogru and Belaglu were awarded the National best communities in Anti-Bush Fires in 2011.

“Many more other communities in the Nandom Traditional Area are working hard to win the Anti-Bush Fire Awards in future all through your efforts and encouragement. Keep it up wherever you find yourself”, the chiefs entreated him.

The citation also commended the former EPA Director for the way and manner he dedicated himself through hardwork and selflessness in the discharge of his duties, and stressed that as the first EPA Officer in the Region he worked tirelessly to improve the health of the people in the area of Environmental Protection.

“In recognition of which we the chiefs and people of the Nandom Tradition Area at our cherished Kakube at 25 years celeberation wish to award you for your wonderful work as ‘MAALU NAA’ of the Nandom Traditional Area.”, the Chiefs noted in their citation.

Receiving the citation , the former Upper West EPA Director thanked the chiefs for recognizing his efforts, and noted that the honour came as a result of the hardwork of the EPA staff in the Region.

He told the Chiefs that the citation had threw a challenge to him and the entire staff of the EPA ,stressing “ I know we still have the obligation to ensure that interventions such as the non-burning concept initiated by the Nandom Paramountcy , the various Land and Water Management Interventions’ such as stone bounding, composite making , mucuna cultivation , half moon and the zai concepts under the Canadian Government Environmental Management Protection(GEMP) are all sustained”

Mr Nkegbe who dedicated the award to all hardworking and selfless Ghanaians said, critical to the success would be for his outfit continuous support in the provision of alternative livelihoods to rural communities, especially women groups.

On his assumption of office in the Upper East Region, the new EPA Director assured the chiefs and people in the Region that he would equally champion the cause of sustainable environmental management which was very dear to his heart in the area GNA
