United States President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle will travel to South Africa to attend the funeral of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela.
“President Obama and the first lady will go to South Africa next week to pay their respects to the memory of Nelson Mandela and to participate in memorial events”. said White House spokesman Jay Carney in a statement.
95-year-old Nelson Mandela died last Thursday at his residence near Johannesburg after a long battle with illness.
South African President Jacob Zuma has earlier said that Mandela who was jailed for 27 years between 1962-1990 as a political prisoner under the apartheir regime will be buried at his ancestral Village in the Eastern Cape on December 15, 2013.
