South African President Jacob Zuma has announced that former anti-apartheid icon and president Nelson Mandela will receive a state funeral on December 15 2013.
Mandela who spent 27 years in jail as a political prisoner under the apartheid regime between 1962 to 1990 died on Thursday December 5th after a long battle with illness.
Madiba as he was popularly known was 95 years old.
After his long stay in jail, Mandela became South Africa’s first black president in the country’s first democratic elections in 1994.
Mr Zuma said Mandela’s body will lie in state in Pretoria and then moved to his childhood Village of Qunu for final funeral rites.
