Former South African President Nelson Mandela has passed away at the age of 95. President Jacob Zuma announced the death of the former apartheid icon on Thursday December 5, 2013. He died at his home in Johannesburg surrounded by members of his family.
Mandela became South Africa’s first black president when he led the African National Congress (ANC) to victory in the country’s first democratic election in 1994.
He withdrew from active politics after serving one term as President of South Africa in 1999.
Nelson Mandela whom at that time was serving a five years sentence was charged alongside several other African National Congress (ANC) activists with sabotage and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964.
He spent almost 27-years between 1962 and 1990 shuffling between South African prisons including at Robben Island under the apartheid regime as a political prisoner.
