The Catholic Diocese of Yendi has constructed and handed over a-six-unit classroom block with ancillary facilities, to the Roman Catholic Primary School at Wagambu in the Mion District.
The project, which cost GHc183,000 was funded by the Kinder Mission Werk of Germany, which provided GHc178,000, while the church topped it up with GHc5, 000
Most Reverend Vincent Sowah Boi-Nai, Catholic Bishop of Yendi, who blessed and inaugurated the project at Wagamibu, said the aim of the church was not only to preach the word of God, but to also develop potentials of the people through education.
Bishop Boi-Nai enumerated a number of educational and healthcare projects undertaken by the church across the Northern Region, and urged inhabitants to patronize them to uplift their educational and health status.
He expressed concern about the spate of forced marriages in the area and advised parents who engaged in such practices to desist from the act and allow young girls to acquire education.
Mr Wumbei Ibn Zakaria, Mion District Co-ordinating Director, commended the church for the initiative, and appealed to other organizations to emulate the gesture to assist the district which is new and therefore needed more infrastructure.
Mr Mohammed Sheik Sulemana, Deputy Director in-charge of Finance and Administration at the Mion District Education Directorate, said absenteeism among teachers was assuming an alarming dimension in the district, and warned that the Directorate would punish those engaged in the act. GNA
