“Phone finder” fined for stealing

A Half Assini Magistrate Court on Tuesday fined Francis Armoo, 21, GH¢240 or in default serve a six months jail term in hard labour for “stealing by finding”.

The convict pleaded guilty and was sentenced accordingly.

The court, presided over by Mr Hans Kofi Kpogo, ordered that the phone should be returned to the owner.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Moses Kwofie, said about 23:30 hours on May 21, 2013, the complainant, Madam Anita Cobbinah, lost her Samsung mobile phone worth GH160.

He said Madam Cobbinah called her phone line but it was switched off.

She, however, called the next day and Armoo received it and directed her to a location to collect it.

However, when the complainant went to the location, Armoo denied having found a phone but rather claimed he picked the sim card from the ground which he inserted into his own mobile phone.

The complainant was not satisfied with the explanation and reported the case to the police and Armoo was arrested.

The prosecutor said the Armoo later admitted in his caution statement of having found the phone on the ground and subsequently returned it to the police through a friend. GNA
