Teenager dies in attempted abortion

An attempt by a 17-year-old Junior High School (JHS) student at Atwedie in the Asante-Akim South District, to abort a four-month pregnancy went tragic as it led to her untimely death.

Elizabeth Marfo is believed to have taken a substance to get rid of the unwanted pregnancy after which she started experiencing severe abdominal pains.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Samuel Sandow Latebu, District Police Commander, who confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said the teenage girl died a day after administering the substance.

She was rushed to the Juaso District Hospital when her situation worsened but could not be saved.

An autopsy showed that she died from an illegal abortion.

The deceased who was an orphan for the past 15 years, had been living with her foster parent, Opanin Kwasi Marfo, at Atwedie. GNA
