The residents of the Abofu Electoral Area in demonstration led by the Member of Parliament for the Okaikoi North constituency under the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Hon. Elizabeth Sacky has today expressed their dissatisfaction about the comments made by the Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Hon. Dr. Alfred Okoh Vanderpuije concerning the Achimota land filled site.
The Chief Executive was believed to have said ‘The dumping of refuse at the Achimota land filled site be suspended and that he does not know of the place is been used as a refuse dump’, which according to the residents led by Hon. Elizabeth Sacky, was a ‘regrettable comments to have been ever made by a Chief Executive of a capital city like Accra’.
Hon. Elizabeth Sacky addressing the media after leading a peaceful demonstration at the land filled site said at least 200 residents visits Achimota Hospital and as well as other hospitals every month with different forms illness as a result of inhaling the stench from the site.
Though the authorities have started covering the refuse dump with sand after some media reportage, the MP suggested better management steps could have been taken to control refuse dumps and refuse generated in the country than what the country is experiencing now.
Opinion leaders and over hundred of residents of the Abofu Electoral Area and its environs; some drivers, shop owners and market women joined the three hour peaceful demonstration to register their grievances.
Meanwhile the assembly member of the Area, Hon. James Akogo told the media, his outfit has petition the appropriate authorities on the matter and would take un regrettable action should governemnt fail to honor the petition within 7 working days.
