Stakeholders in education are very vital for development – Okletey Terlabi

Mr Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, has said government’s vision of shaping the future of the nation could only be achieved if all stakeholders are proactive in moulding the character of students and individuals in their care.

He said education goes beyond the transfer of knowledge or preparing the mind of students for examination but rather about developing people.

Mr Terlabi said this when addressing the fifth speech and prize giving day of the Mampong Presbyterian Senior High School (SHS).

The ceremony was celebrated under the theme: “Provision of quality education, the role of stakeholders”.

Mr Terlabi observed that a holistic education could not be delivered either by a government or an individual single-handedly adding that it was a collective responsibility, hence the continuous call to stakeholders to play their roles meaningfully for the country’s economic development and emancipation of the nation.

“It is therefore conferred on us to plant in our students the capacity to learn, develop right attitudes, values and character in order to appreciate the world around them”, he stated.

Mr Terlabi noted that education was a key to success in life and therefore the government’s “Better Ghana Agenda could only be relevant if its citizenry were well educated.

He said it was the right of every child and young person to have access to quality education because education does not only help one to earn a living, but also develop a nation of skilfully resourced, well informed and morally sound people who could build a just and prosperous society.

Mr Terlabi reiterated government’s commitment to improving incentive packages and motivation for teachers in order to check attrition rates in schools.

He said the distance learning programme has been intensified with the aim of upgrading the skills of teachers and government had made it possible for the enjoyment of the Single Spine Salary Structure for the betterment of teachers.

Mr Terlabi used the occasion to appeal to all Ghanaians to be circumspect of their utterances so as not to sow any seed of discord and division in the society but rather to promote peace, unity and reconciliation.

Ms Benedicta Naana Biney, Director General of the Ghana Education Service, said the government recognized that the provision of equity and resources allocation held the key to quality and national development, hence the continuous support made in the various interventions put into the education delivery process.

She said responsibilities on the central government and the provision of adequate facilities and the supporting logistics for effective teaching and learning process were very huge, hence the call for community participation and the collaboration of all stakeholder to complement the efforts of government.
