The two beneficiary Districts are Sunyani West and Tain. The main aim of the project is to help improve the livelihood, marketing and entrepreneurial skills of rural women through training in vocational skills in order to reduce poverty in rural areas.
Currently 60 women selected from Abronye, Aprakukrom, Fawotrikosie and its environs in the Sunyani West District are undergoing two months training in soap and detergent making. Vodafone Ghana Foundation through its World of Difference project being managed by United Way Ghana is supporting the project with GHc5000.
Speaking to newsmen during a visit to the trainees at Aprakukrom, the CEO of GLOMEF, Raphael Godlove Ahenu said the rise in domestic violence cases is due to the inability to tackle one of the major root causes of rights violation, which is economic over dependency on men by women.
He observed that economically empowered women are better able to tackle domestic violence and also lead others out of this traumatic problem. The CEO noted that a few case studies on this issue have given evidence as to how entrepreneurial women have fought back against violence and have established themselves as independent leaders of their community.
Based upon these stories, it is proposed to scale up these small cases of success by educating women and empowering them with livelihood skills so that they are able to confidently fight back against domestic violence. Mr. Ahenu said under the project more women will be trained in vocational skills to help empowerment them economically. This, according to him will go a long way to reduce domestic violence against women.
He appealed to donors to support the project to help improve eradicate poverty among rural women in Ghana.
To ensure sustainability of the project, the CEO said the credit facility as revolving fund has been established, which beneficiaries will pay back to enable others to also benefit from the facility, adding that the repayment clause will also compel the beneficiaries to work hard to expand their businesses.
The Vodafone Ambassador, Joana Oduro Sarpong who is training the women urged the women to take the training very serious since it has the potential to change their livelihood.
