Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante, Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana urged media practitioners to promote peace and good governance and ensure that the country comes out of the 2012 election more united.
Rev Asante said peace is priceless and the condition for the possibility of sustainable development, prosperity and security, adding that it is only within this context that the standard of living can be raised.
He gave the advice In a homily on Thursday at a thanksgiving service by the Governing Board, Management and Staff of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) in Accra on the theme: “Peace and Unity in an Election Year.”
Preaching on “Our Collective Service to God and Secular Profession”, Rev Asante said the impression was created that secular profession does not reflect full-time service to God, and that to serve the Lord full-time, one must enter into the ordained or vocation ministry.
He explained that those who think that way are caught in the struggle between secular demands and desire and feel that their work is a secular activity working only for a living and for the material things in life.
Rev Asante noted that the consequences of this kind of thinking are that they end up working with little or no sense of godly purpose in their jobs.
He expressed concern about the perception that sacred work belongs to the pastor or missionary.
Rev Asante said the scripture shows that God’s work goes far and that no legitimate vocation is less spiritual than any other, if it is done with integrity and a desire to serve God and to love and help meet the needs of others.
Rev Asante urged workers to be committed to their profession and adhere to the rules governing their organisations devoid of lateness, absenteeism and other vices that affect working ethics.
Ms Doris A. Kuwornu, Director of Corporate Affairs at GBC, said the service was aimed at thanking God for His knowledge, wisdom, guidance, blessings and peace throughout 2011.
She called for re-thinking through and beyond 2012, re-strategising, re-alignment and strengthening of minds at GBC in the pursuit of future possibilities. GNA
