Former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings has for the first time hinted that, she intends to contest President Mills for the flagbearer slot of the ruling NDC party for the 2012 general elections.
This is the first time Nana Konadu has personally spoken about her presidential ambition. She was reported to have officially declared her presidential ambition at a meeting of the NDC Council of Elders held in January, chaired by Mr Harry Sawyer, a former Minister of Education.
T-shirts have already been printed that show her as the candidate who will effect real change, with inscriptions, ‘I Believe in Nana Konadu’ and the back, ‘Change, Real Change’.
A website run by the group Friends of Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings (FONKAR) has some photographs of Mrs. Rawlings in a studied pose. The exclusive photos, 14 in all, captures Mrs. Rawlings dressed in different attires and posing for the cameras.
However, the wife of former President Jerry John Rawlings, has denied allegations of hiding under the cloak of party foot soldiers to declare her ambitions to contest President Mills.
Speaking at the SRC week celebration of University Of Education, Winneba – Kumasi Campus on the topic: “Multi-Party Democracy in Ghana, Challenges for the University Student” the founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement stated categorically that she has the intent to contest President Mills for the flagbearership slot of the NDC.
Mrs Rawlings however added that she is yet to publicly declare her intention to contest President Mills for the position.
“Having an intent is a good thing and I’m sure you all have aspirations. It is good to have aspirations and it is good to have an intent. The intent is there but I have not declared yet”.
