British Woman Convicted of Enslaving Worker From Africa

A British judge has convicted a former hospital director of trafficking a woman from Tanzania and enslaving her.

The judge ordered Saeeda Khan to pay Mwanahamisi Mruke $40,000, but her nine-month jail sentence was suspended.

Khan brought Mruke from Tanzania four years ago, where she worked in a hospital she owned.

The judge said Wednesday Mruke was only paid for the first year she was in London.

Prosecutors say Mruke was confined to Khan’s London home and fed only two slices of bread a day.

Mruke says she felt betrayed because she followed Khan to London with hopes of improving her life and helping her daughter with college expenses.

During sentencing the judge called Khan’s actions “callous and greedy”. voa
