Gabrielle Giffords is alive, out of surgery after shooting

A United States congresswoman has been shot while holding an event with her constituents in the US state of Arizona.

Reports coming from local news said Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head on Saturday outside a grocery store in Tucson, Arizona’s second largest city.

Earlier reports had it that rep. Giffords had died of her injuries. However a hospital spokesperson said the representative is alive and is fighting for her live. The hospital said Giffords underwent surgery and has been transferred to an intensive care unit. Doctor treating Giffords said her condition continues to be serious but he is “optimistic” about her recovery.

Authorities said at least 17 other people were shot in the incident and six of them died. The police has identified the suspect as a 22 year old white male, Jared Lee Loughner.
