In what appears to be a defense for President Mills, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa, a Deputy Information Minister has bluntly lashed out at Dr. Spio Gabrah, a First Vice Chairman of the NDC.
Mr. Ablakwa who was exasperated by Dr. Gabrah’s latest criticism of President Mills described the CEO of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organization (CTO) as a naked opportunist.
Dr. Spio Garbrah at a Youth Empowerment workshop organized by the Tertiary Educational Institutions Network (TEIN) of the NDC, condemned government’s lack of care and sympathy to the plight of Former President Rawlings whose residence was torched in February.
The failed Flagbearer Aspirant questioned why Government found it necessary to donate three million dollars to earthquake victims in faraway Haiti, whiles a Former President and Founder of the ruling party was “homeless”, nine months after he was hit by a disaster. He also condemned attempts by some executives of the party to neglect hardworking foot soldiers by suggesting that the ‘foot soldier’ concept is alien to the NDC.
But in a sharp rebuttal, Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa said Dr. Garbrah’s concerns regarding a home for the Former First Family smacks of mischief.
He told the Host of Citi Eyewitness News, Shamima Muslim that Dr. Spio-Garbrah as a member of the National Executive Committee of the NDC sat in a meeting at the Castle where President Mills spelt out all that had been done regarding the accommodation of the former first family.
According to him, all those who participated in the meeting including Dr. Spio-Garbrah, were satisfied with the President’s efforts in getting a home for the Ex President.
“It comes as a shock that Dr. Spio-Garbrah is now saying that President Mills is not treating the Founder well and that he is homeless. Meanwhile in that meeting, Dr. Spio-Garbrah never pointed out his objection or dissatisfaction to what has gone on so far. On the contrary, he together with the Ministers, the National Security Coordinator and the Chief of Staff were all impressed. The Founder has not complained so where is this coming from? The NDC has to do some serious soul searching. There is so much naked opportunism going on and the earlier we start checking ourselves the better for all of us” he said.
Mr. Ablakwa said Dr. Spio-Garbrah’s assertion that his comments were not meant for public consumption is below the belt. He said God was only exposing people who denigrate the President in the absence of the press.
“Dr. Garbrah is saying that he didn’t intend that this conversation should come public. At least he was meeting members of our party so when you tell them that the Founder is homeless and the President is caring for the people of Haiti…you didn’t even add that this same President has also given GH¢20 million to the flood victims and more than GH¢100 million for emergency construction of Senior High School blocks to cater for parents and guardians who have been in the 4 years Senior High School program and many other interventions. Dr. Spio Garbrah wants to only incite the youth against President Mills and portray him as a wicked President and an insensitive person who doesn’t care about the founder, the man he served as vice president and who doesn’t care about this country. This naked opportunism and plain safe incitement masquerading as apostles who care for the people is not fair to our country, our party and the President of Ghana” he said angrily.
Mr. Okudjeto Ablakwa said the TEIN meeting was illegal per the party’s regulations since it was not sanctioned by the party’s National Youth Organizer.
“If some of them think that we are talking like this because we have positions, we are ready to leave any day. I am not sure that my destiny is tied to a position given by Professor Mills. I can survive out there. It is high time we look at NDC members in the face and demand the truth from them” he said.
