World football body FIFA has suspended Nigeria from international competition because of government interference in the sport.
A statement says FIFA’s emergency committee reached the decision Monday, following several developments involving the Nigerian Football Federation.
It said those developments include court actions against members of the federation’s executive committee, pressure to oust the federation’s acting general secretary, and a decision to restart the Nigerian League without relegations from the previous season
FIFA warned it would suspend Nigeria back in July, after President Goodluck Jonathan imposed a two-year ban on the Nigerian team competing abroad. Mr. Jonathan announced the ban after Nigeria’s poor performance in the World Cup. He reversed his decision after FIFA’s warning.
