Ghana will not repeat mistakes of oil-rich countries – Veep

Vice President John Dramani Mahama on Thursday reiterated government’s determination to avoid the “Dutch disease”, where manufacturing sectors have been sacrificed in oil rich countries.

He said government was also working around the clock to reduce dependence on foreign donor organizations and adopt pragmatic measures to cushion the impact of the withdrawal of such support. Vice President Mahama stated this when Mr Koos Richelle, Director-General of European Union Commission, called on him at the Castle, Osu, with their discussions focusing on ensuring the efficient and effective use of EU aid to Ghana.

He commended the European Union Commission for its tremendous support to the development of Ghana and gave the assurance that the government would do everything possible to achieve the Millennium Development Goals at the stipulated time.

Mr Richelle assured the Vice President that his outfit would continue to support Ghana for her to achieve the middle level status in the coming years through the oil income. He gave the assurance that his outfit would also cement its ties with Ghana for future development. GNA
